Description:

Creating an efficient, well-defined set of data is the first step toward any significant computational exploration; whether the researcher is interested in an interactive map, a network visualization, or statistical analysis. The goal of this course is to provide participants with elementary skills and knowledge to start working on their own database during the meetings and continue doing so independently afterwards. The course will be mostly practical, with participants working with laptops on different organized tasks. We will primarily work with SQLite, nodegoat and Python.

Audience:

The course is organized for a group of 20 humanities researchers with no programming knowledge but interested in the possibilities that digital tools offer for database management. In advance to the course, participants will be asked to develop preliminary ideas for a database and to prepare a (small) set of data.

Organizers and instructors: Leonor Ávarez Francés (UL), Mateusz Kuzak (Netherlands eScience Center), Carlos Martínez Ortiz (Netherlands eScience Center)

Number of participants: 20

Required material: bring your own laptop and make sure Python (Anaconda) (see http://swcarpentry.github.io/workshop-template/#python for installation instructions) is installed in advance. In case you experience installation issues, please come to the venue between 8:30 and 9:00 on January 26th (prior to the start of the course)
